The Three Ways to Spend Florida Scholarship Funds — and When to Use Each
By My Learning Source · August 20, 2026 · Scholarships, Guides
Florida scholarship dollars never arrive as cash in your bank account. They sit in your student's education savings account, and there are exactly three ways to move them: direct billing, MyScholarShop, and reimbursement. Each has a lane it's best at — and a trap.
1. Direct billing — for schools, tutors and therapists
Approved providers bill your student's account and get paid from it directly. You give the provider your Scholarship ID, they submit an invoice inside EMA, you approve it. Money never touches your hands.
The trap: school tuition invoices must be approved within 30 days of submission or the invoice is deleted and the money returns to the account — recoverable, but it delays your school's payment. Providers can only be paid after a service happens, not before.
2. MyScholarShop — for curriculum from contracted vendors
An online storefront inside your account. You browse, add to cart, and check out with scholarship dollars — no receipts, no fronting money. It opens within a few days after each funding deposit lands.
The trap: the catalog covers only vendors Step Up has contracted with, so many well-known homeschool publishers simply aren't in it. Orders can take up to two weeks to clear review, ship only to Florida addresses, and returns go through the vendor, not Step Up.
3. Reimbursement — for everything else
Buy with your own money, upload the receipt, get paid back. This is the route that opens the whole market — including most independent vendors on this site — which is why experienced families use it most.
Note: Many of the vendors on this site are reimbursable but not on MyScholarshop. Why you may ask? Because Step Up for Students has been working on a new platform for over two years and have not been able to launch it. For the past two years, all new vendors have been told to wait, so you aren't getting the greatest and newest products out there, just those that were on the old site before they started working on the new site. That is why this site was developed, to give you more choices of vendors to use your scholarship funds.
Note #2: you're fronting the cash, and reviews can take up to 60 days. If your request goes on hold for a missing document, the 60-day clock restarts from zero.
Action items
- Match the route to the purchase before you buy: providers → direct billing; contracted curriculum → MyScholarShop; everything else → reimbursement.
- Start a receipt folder today. Every receipt needs the full date including the year, itemized amounts, and clear proof you paid.
- Never assume an item is eligible — check before you buy, not after.
- Approve provider invoices the week they arrive; don't let the 30-day window sneak up.
